Social Sweat: Three Signals Turning Wellness Into a Third Place

SOCIAL SWEAT

The bar is no longer the default setting for connection. Movement, heat, music and recovery are becoming social infrastructure—creating new reasons to gather and new briefs for designers. This issue looks at wellness not as escape, but as collective energy.

01 / NEW OPENING — POSITIVE ENERGY, BALGOWLAH

Positive Energy opened on Sydney’s Northern Beaches with a proposition described as less gym, more private-members-club energy. The space combines Pilates, strength, boxing, yoga, breathwork and recovery with therapy rooms, ice baths, a café and juice bar. Miami Art Deco curves and soft colour shift the atmosphere away from performance severity towards hospitality.

The mix matters. A class may drive the visit, but the café, transition spaces and social rituals create dwell time. Fitness becomes one component within a broader experience of sanctuary and connection.

The signal: the new neighbourhood wellness venue is a hybrid—part studio, part clubhouse, part alcohol-free social space.

02 / CULTURE — THE FESTIVALIZATION OF WELLNESS

The Global Wellness Summit identifies festivalization as a defining 2026 signal: wellness raves, mass-participation fitness events, somatic dance and multi-day gatherings combining music, movement, sauna culture and emotional release.

The distinction is participation over prescription. These formats replace the quiet, perfected wellness image with volume, collective energy and permission to feel. They also widen the emotional range of the category. Wellness can be ecstatic, playful and culturally charged—not only calm.

The signal: wellbeing is becoming entertainment, ritual and identity at once. The strongest experiences will be designed for collective memory, not just individual improvement.

03 / EXPERIENCE — SAUNA BECOMES THEATRE

Othership’s Williamsburg location combines sauna, cold plunge and guided breathwork in a multi-sensory social environment. In 2026 the brand pushed the format further with sauna theatre, DJ-led sessions and communal emotional rituals—turning heat and recovery into a new performance medium.

This is experiential design with the body inside the narrative. Temperature, sound, light, breath and social proximity are not background conditions; they are the material of the event. The venue is simultaneously stage, bathhouse and gathering place.

The signal: wellness programming is becoming cultural programming. A recovery space can now host stories, nightlife and emotional release without losing its core purpose.

THE A—N READ

Social wellness is not the next version of the gym. It is a new form of hospitality built around participation. Its value lives in the transitions: the conversation after a class, the collective exhale, the reason to stay. Design must support intensity and intimacy in equal measure.

What if the healthiest place in the city was also the place with the most cultural energy?
